Obama’s State of the Union Address For Kids

I rewrote the highlights of President Obama’s State of the Union Address for children. Although taught in school, real-life politics aren’t typically aimed toward children. I decided to take Obama’s key ideas and make them legible and relevant for children. I defined complicated terms and ‘dumbed-down’ the nature of political language. I focused on short simple sentences as well as making every sentence as clear as possible. I made smaller paragraphs to align with the child’s idea of a paragraph. I also bolded subtitles to evoke an ease of readability. Lastly, I presented the information much like the original article, in a nonbiased way.
INTRODUCTION
This Tuesday night, President Barrack Obama presented his State of the Union. The State of the Union is an important tradition. Since President George Washington, every president has given a State of the Union. The State of the Union is when a new or reelected president speaks to the Congress, which has two houses, the House of Representatives and the Senate. In this speech, the President tells Congress how America is doing and what he plans to do to make America better. The President speaks to Congress because both work together to accomplish goals.
SCHOOLS
In President Barrack Obama’s speech, he talked about several important issues. One issue he spoke about was early childhood education. This means that President Obama hopes to give to children with parents who make less money than other parents an excellent preschool opportunity.
President Obama also talked about high schools and colleges. He hopes to improve the teaching skills of high school math, science, and technology teachers. He also wants to implement a “College Scorecard”. This card will help parents and college students understand the best colleges they can pay for and which they cannot.
JOBS
President Obama also talked about minimum wage. Minimum wage is the least amount of hourly pay that someone can earn at a job. In fact, it is the wage that most of you will be making at your first job.  He hopes to increase this wage from $7.25 to $9.00 in 2 years. That’s an hourly increase of 24% or $1.75! President Obama will also try to make jobs stay in America instead of moving to other countries. This will help make our country more successful.
IMMIGRATION
President Obama talked about immigration, which is a big issue in America. Immigration is the movement of people from their born country to another country where they weren’t born. In America, we have a large problem with immigration. There are correct ways to immigrate to America and illegal ways. In recent years, many people from Mexico, the country below America, have been coming to America illegally. President Obama hopes to make a way for people to stay in America who have already travelled to America illegally. He also hopes to make America safer by making it harder for people to immigrate here in the wrong ways.
CONCLUSION
Throughout this article, I have made it clear that this is what President Obama hopes to do. Just because he wants to do something, doesn’t mean it will actually happen just because he is President. It will take the teamwork of Congress and the President as well as a lot of money to make these hopes come true.
